“Since
singing is so good a thing, I wish all men would learne to
singe.”
(William
Byrd, one of the great English composers of the 16th Century)
The Hertford Choral Society aims to make
high quality singing an accessible and enjoyable experience
for the people of Hertford and beyond, either as members of
the Society or of the audience.
With a history dating back to 1938, the
Hertford Choral Society has always maintained an open membership
policy as a community choir and currently has around 150 members
covering a wide spectrum of varied musical experience and
of all ages (including several of school age), coming from
a wide geographical area. Although there are no auditions,
the Hertford Choral Society has a strong reputation for high
quality performances of an extensive range of music.
The choir’s standards continue to
rise under the leadership of its musical director, Derek
Harrison, who has also been closely involved in a number
of initiatives, some of which have won awards.
Typically the Hertford Choral Society gives
four concerts each season and rehearsals
are held each Tuesday evening during term-time in Hertford.
Other regular choir activities include workshops, singing
days and an exciting variety of social events.
In recent years the Hertford Choral Society
has been paying particular attention to improving the “whole
audience experience” at its concerts and to reaching
out to new audiences and singers in order to keep music-making,
and in particular choral music, alive with performances readily
accessible to the local community.

Choral Society, please contact our Membership Secretary (Mrs
